Design Orchard

Design Orchard is located at a prominent junction along one of the world’s iconic shopping streets, Singapore’s Orchard Road. The building is designed to act as an incubator for emerging Singaporean designers: integrating a high-profile retail space at ground level with co-working creative spaces at levels two and three. Atop the building is a rooftop public space, which is tiered away from the junction to form an urban amphitheatre and stage along with a shaded pocket park. The collaborative spaces provide a nurturing environment for young designers to go from concept to production, market their products at the retail spaces below, and showcase their designs with fashion and design events at the rooftop garden amphitheatre.

Hills and Valleys Skyscraper

Drawing inspiration from the natural landscape and mountain parks in Shenzhen, the Hills and Valleys Skyscraper is designed with twelve 7-storey high “Sky Hills” that connect three office towers configured around a centralised core. Accommodating child-care facilities and other amenities for workers, the hills are strategically introduced at Multiple Ground Levels that serve as the refuge and lift transfer floors of the tower. Designed as large internal atria with pockets of cascading sky gardens and planted waterfall valleys, the hills are naturally ventilated outdoor spaces, shielded from the wind and rain. This arrangement opens up the common lift lobby areas to daylight, greenery and fresh air, creating a comfortable micro climate and biophilic working environment within the tropical high-rise.

CapitaMall Tianfu

Drawing references from Chengdu’s natural heritage, Capitamall Tianfu adopts a geological metaphor that is inspired by the rock formations, peaks and ridges of the city’s famous Qingcheng Mountains. The integrated mixed use development is conceived as a gargantuan mass of stone, chiselled and sculpted to reveal crystalline volumes and facets with distinctive colours and textures. “Crevices” between the sculpted volumes at podium level read as narrow “ravines” filled with luxuriant vegetation from terraced gardens and cascading waters. Landscaped sky gardens are further extended up into the towers, multiplying greenery vertically throughout its height and making nature accessible to residents and office workers. An extensive Commercial Plaza on the podium roof gifts the city with an urban communal space, which is designed as part of a retail loop connected to the atrium urban spaces below, creating a continuous and fully integrated retail experience.

The Grove

The project is a mixed-use development with residential and commercial components in Baiyun District of Guangzhou, China. Located adjacent to the lushly vegetated Baiyun Mountain, the site is privileged with accessible natural scenery, which became the principle driving force of design, shaping the building form and unit arrangement.
To capitalise on the view, the building is planned as an “U” shape to maximise direct vistas towards the landscape. Accessible sky gardens every 4 floors created platforms for social interaction and bring nature closer to residents. Full height green walls sandwich the sky garden, defining the green core of the towers. The landscaped roofs of the low-rise block and commercial buildings maximise green coverage on site and create elevated grounds for activities. Greenery is further introduced to the residents through planter boxes on the building facade that are maintained from the units. A lattice framework weaves together the facade elements of bay window, planter box and balcony, providing the structure on which greenery can proliferate, eventually knitting a variegated natural facade for the buildings.
The commercial component of the development on the ground level is broken up for a more human scale, compatible with typical retail establishments prevalent in Guangzhou. A sunken plaza is introduced to create a quieter gathering space screened off from the noise of the main roads. Driving along the Baiyun Highway, the Baiyun Mixed Development unfolds in front of the spectator’s eyes, with multi level greenery that echoes the lush greenery of the Baiyun Mountain ranges opposite. The organic elements in the project are bold statements against the cookie-cutter style of residential developments in China, and hopefully can help to propel a new wave of sustainable architecture in the country.

Kampung Admiralty

Kampung Admiralty is Singapore’s first building to bring together a mix of public facilities and services under one roof. The traditional approach is for each government agency to have their own plot of land, resulting in standalone buildings. This one-stop integrated complex maximises land use and the benefits of co-location, and is a prototype for meeting the needs of Singapore’s ageing population.

The compact site, adjacent to a train station in medium-rise public housing area, prompted a layered ‘club sandwich’ approach. The result is a “Vertical Kampung (village)”, with a Community Plaza sheltered by a Medical Centre supporting a rooftop Community Park overlooked by apartments for seniors. These three distinct layers juxtapose the various building uses to foster diversity of cross-programming and frees up the ground level for activity generators. The proximity to healthcare, social, commercial and other amenities support inter-generational bonding and promote active ageing in place. The development has proven extremely popular, and was used as the backdrop for the Prime Minister’s 2018 National Day address, as a visual embodiment of Singapore’s aspirations for a more caring community environment.

Alila Villas Uluwatu

The multi-award-winning Alila Villas Uluwatu resort is located in the Bukit Peninsula of Bali, a wild landscape of cliffs and rugged savannah landscapes, totally unlike the rest of the island. The resort redefines luxury as delight and enjoyment of the natural beauty and sense of place, rather than excessive consumption – making it one of the first ecologically sustainable luxury resorts of the region.

Working on all scales, WOHA developed the masterplan of the entire property, which includes Alila Villas Uluwatu and the OMNIA Dayclub, the architecture for the resort, the interiors as well as a suite of furniture.

The 50-suite hotel and 34 residential villas were built from mainly locally sourced materials, such as limestone from the site and recycled railways sleepers. It was inspired by the pale limestone cliffs and the deep blue of the sea and references Bali’s rich culture with its centuries of influences, from the Bronze Age animism, to the Hindu Majapahit Empire as well as Dutch Art Deco and contemporary modern design.

Sky Green

Sky Green a mixed-use development located at the heart of Taichung in a densely developed and vibrant neighborhood. The site is made up of two rectangular plots, one facing the main city thoroughfare, Gongyi Road, and the other facing Daying Street, a quieter secondary street. The development consists of two 26-storey residential towers with apartment units from level 4 onwards, as well as retail spaces. To connect to its setting, and the hustle and bustle of the streets, the building’s retail spaces are located from ground level to level 3. The shops have staggered patterned glass cladding to give an urban backdrop to the tree-lined pedestrian walkways and modern outdoor street furniture.

Away from the busy street life an intimate, serene landscaped courtyard greets the residents as they return to their homes. Above the retail shops rise the two residential towers as well as generous recreation facilities for indoor and outdoor activities. Both towers have deeply recessed windows and the façades are enveloped with protruding balconies with trees, sky gardens and mesh screens that serve as a trellis for green creeper plants. Landscaping is treated as a key material in creating the building envelope for the residential towers. The façade elements create deep sun-shading and the greenery acts as an active and living interface between the interior and exterior environment.

Large sky terraces at every five floors within the block extend the living space of residents from indoors to outdoors, creating a biophilic environment within a high-rise development. Every unit is visually connected to greenery outside their apartment windows. A series of open, yet sheltered sky gardens, terraces, balconies and planters create a breathable façade and visual interest, enhancing the real estate value of these apartments in a densely built up area while providing spatial relief to apartment owners.

Oasia Hotel Downtown

Oasia Hotel Downtown sets out to create an alternative imagery for commercial high-rise developments. It combines innovative ways to intensify land use with a tropical approach that showcases a perforated, permeable, furry, verdant tower of green in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD).

In programmatic response to the client’s brief of having distinct Soho, Hotel & Club rooms, WOHA adopted a club sandwich approach by creating a series of different strata, each with its own sky garden. Introducing layers of elevated ground levels allow the precious but limited ground floor space to be multiplied, creating generous public areas for recreation and social interaction throughout the high-rise.

443 Queen Street

The design of 443 Queen Street tower explores the potential of passive, low-technology, high-ambiance design for the sub-tropical climate.

Urbanistically, the development opens itself up to the city. At the river level, the pedestrian realm flows under the giant umbrella of the hanging gardens, to the cafe and restaurant which inhabit the base of the building.

The cluster form of the tower allows further views through the site and allows spatial relationships with the diverse surrounding fabric to be developed. The units fully exploit their access to views, light and air.

Parkroyal Collection Pickering

At home in central Singapore, between the central business district and Chinatown, the Parkroyal Collection Pickering captures passersbys’ attention with its striking lush, green terraces. The project is a study of how we can not only conserve our greenery in a built-up high-rise city centre but multiply it in a manner that is architecturally striking, integrated and sustainable.

Inspired by Hong Lim Park, which is located next to the site, rice terraces and the topography of natural landscapes, the building brings 15,000 square metres of greenery – around double the area of the site – back into the city. Every one of the 367 guest rooms offers a tropical garden view from its windows.

The passive strategies such as naturally ventilated corridors, solar-powered irrigation, rain water retention and sun shading have helped this project to achieve Singapore’s Green Mark Platinum rating, the nation’s highest environmental certification.
