The Hedberg

The Hedberg is a new 8000m2 Academy building for the University of Tasmania and the Tasmanian State Government, that brings together Australia’s oldest functioning theatre, the Theatre Royal with a new performing arts centre and the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music. Located in the historic, mixed-use, port-side Wapping district of Hobart, Tasmania Australia, the Academy is within walking distance to the city’s water front and historical city center. In addition to the existing 750 seat Theatre Royal, the new development houses 3 new major public performance spaces, a 350 seat recital hall, a 285 seat studio theatre, and a 150 seat salon along with a full array of recording, rehearsal, and practice facilities.

The SIT-Plot 1 campus is uniquely endowed with an existing secondary forest. The design capitalises on this green site asset by integrating its learning environments with biophilic indoor-outdoor tropical spaces. To forge an imageable “Campus-in-a-Park” identity, the academic blocks are organised as a chain of buildings encompassing the central forest courtyard that is transformed into an accessible Community Park. This serves as the heart of SIT, contributing to a strong sense of place that is characterised by memorable nodes for interaction, recreation and rejuvenation.

The design leverages on the site’s undulating terrain by creating two public ground levels that segregate vehicles from pedestrians, creating a people-friendly, car-lite campus. These fenceless, 24/7 publicly accessible ground levels are interconnected across the Punggol Digital District, linking shared carparks and a series of key public spaces.

SIT’s primary signature library building is strategically located at the prime intersection between New Punggol Road and the pedestrianised Campus Boulevard as a prominent urban landmark.

On the rooftops, photovoltaic panels are arrayed as a banner of sustainability over the entire campus. These serve as a key renewable energy source that powers SIT’s Multi-Energy Micro Grid located within Plot 1. Productivity features include precast facades and structural systems for the academic blocks and structural steel for the long span bridges.

Punggol Digital District

Punggol Digital District (PDD) is planned as part of Singapore’s strategy to sustain long-term economic growth by creating new development areas island-wide, bringing jobs and social amenities closer to residents.

Situated in Punggol North, PDD is envisioned to be a vibrant and inclusive district underpinned by cutting-edge technology, as well as urban and social innovation which make everyday living more convenient and sustainable. As Singapore’s first Enterprise District, PDD will provide flexibility for the land use mix and scale to be curated at district-level, enabling deeper integration and synergy of different uses and spaces to realise the vision of the District. The District is also planned to be connected to the greater Punggol area, with a car-lite, green, and vibrant environment.

Punggol Digital District will be the first district to adopt an integrated masterplan approach that brings together a business park, a university and community facilities and transport infrastructure. The district-level planning approach creates synergies, optimises land use and catalyses community building. It also allows us to design and integrate innovative technological platforms and from the ground up, transforming the way people work, live, learn and play in an inclusive and sustainable environment.

Enabling Village

The Enabling Village is a demonstration of heartland rejuvenation through adaptive reuse of the old Bukit Merah Vocational Institute / Employment & Employability Institute (e2i) in Redhill. The site was previously fenced-in, inward-looking and did not contribute to the neighbourhood. The Masterplan conceives the Village as a new community heart and opens up the space as a park to connect people with disabilities, residents and public.

The design removes all physical barriers, extends linkages and creates a variety of shared spaces, gardens and amenities, breathing life between and within buildings. A simple robust palette of finishes and motifs was adopted as a kit-of-parts system to stitch together surfaces and spaces of the new and existing.

The porous and accessible nature of the Enabling Village creates an inclusive environment, integrating people with disabilities as equal in the community.

Planting trees and increasing green spaces is the most widely available and effective way to combat the effects of man-made climate change. The Singapore Pavilion at the 2020 World EXPO in Dubai integrates landscaping into its design, showing that the built environment does not need to displace nature. With its theme of ‘Nature, Nurture, Future’, the Pavilion encapsulates Singapore’s story of overcoming its physical limitations as a small island city-state and adapting itself to become a liveable and biophilic city of the future.

Located in the World EXPO 2020 Sustainability District, the Pavilion creates an oasis of lush trees, verdant shrubs and vibrant orchids in the Arabian desert. This oasis is a self-sufficient ecosystem, powered entirely by photo-voltaic panels to achieve net-zero energy and water consumption during the 6 months of operation with management of energy and desalination of ground water.

Kampung Admiralty is Singapore’s first building to bring together a mix of public facilities and services under one roof. The traditional approach is for each government agency to have their own plot of land, resulting in standalone buildings. This one-stop integrated complex maximises land use and the benefits of co-location, and is a prototype for meeting the needs of Singapore’s ageing population.

The compact site, adjacent to a train station in medium-rise public housing area, prompted a layered ‘club sandwich’ approach. The result is a “Vertical Kampung (village)”, with a Community Plaza sheltered by a Medical Centre supporting a rooftop Community Park overlooked by apartments for seniors. These three distinct layers juxtapose the various building uses to foster diversity of cross-programming and frees up the ground level for activity generators. The proximity to healthcare, social, commercial and other amenities support inter-generational bonding and promote active ageing in place. The development has proven extremely popular, and was used as the backdrop for the Prime Minister’s 2018 National Day address, as a visual embodiment of Singapore’s aspirations for a more caring community environment.

School of The Arts

This project is a hybrid between a specialist arts high school and paerforming arts centre, and is a machine for breezes, located in dense, tropical inner city Singapore. The School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA) is thoughtfully designed not only to provide a safe and stimulating environment for learning, but also places of delight for the public.

The podium contains a music auditorium, drama theatre, black box theatre and several informal performing spaces. To enhance the vibrancy of the city, shops are provided along the external covered walkway and a large civic amphitheatre is created under the canopy of large conserved trees. The sectional relationship between gathering spaces on different levels allows for easy ventilation and a comfortable microclimate, with barrier free access incorporated throughout the building.

The academic blocks are designed for natural ventilation with breezeways in-between the blocks. Gardens on the top of decks cut out heat gain, absorb carbon, and provide shady outdoor break-out spaces and play areas, while green facades cut out glare and dust, keep classrooms cool and dampen traffic noise. These seamless indoor-outdoor spaces with comfortable microclimates allow different sized groups to interact and relax without leaving the secure environment of the school.
